Inspiration Tuesday via Refused TV

Hmmm something new to try on Tuesday’s post some inspiration on to you guys/gals that I find around which gets the creative juices going. Refused.tv looks to be a kick ass collective of directors (one of my favs is Rob “Whitey”  McConnaughy and Aggressive) who are doing amazing work on the music video, commercial and visual effects front. I must fan out a little on Whitey’s work since he has made some of the all time best snowboard videos under Kingpin production with Brad Kremer (now with Mack Dawg productions amazing snow/skate vids as well). Whitey took most of his snow stuff off his site (too bad ) except for this gem of the Chris Coulter intro Chris intro .

So take some time to check out Refused’s site and check out some really good work from all the talented directors and let’s hope one day Whitey, Brad and the OG M3/South Lake crew will get back together for another kick ass snow flick. PS Whitey always had the best soundtracks in his videos. Links- Whitey’s Site  Aggressive’s Site.

9462_12101762301.jpgStudiodaily has a great article up on the collaboration between The Orphanage, ILM, The Embassy and The Pixel Liberation Front, for FX work on Iron Man. The article focuses mainly on ILM, but is well worth the read. There is a great write up on how they used various materials that were collected during shooting to create an unplanned sequence after production wrapped. Amazing work. Check out the article here.Jim EDIT: Not to be outdone fxguide.com has an amazing article and postcast on this subject and me being a big nerd about UI and HUD vfx Dav Rauch talks about alot of the HUD vfx  The Orphanage (one of my favs) did for the movie. Read and listen here  Ironman story and podcast

A couple of months ago, my friend and fellow filmmaker, Bill Simmon tapped me to shoot a mini-doc for him on Political Blogger Steve Benen. Bill, Myself and Seth Mobely shot the film in a short afternoon and Bill cut it himself. Bill won the Goldstone Award at the Vermont International Film Festival for the Piece.

Raising Arizona

So, I’ve been swamped lately….. but I finally got my laptop back so no more excuses. I’m in Arizon now working a movie “UDBP”, Untitiled Dominican Baseball Project, though “Sugar” is what it’s looking like now. It’s being directed by the same team that made Half Nelson, which was an excellent movie and has received many accolades. It’s hot as shit here and we’re standing out in the sun all day on a baseball field!

I went skydiving on our day off which was unbelievable. I can’t even begin to explain it.

I just put a bunch of pictures up on flickr from a birthday gather the crew had for director Ryan Fleck and DP Andrij Parekh. Check them out here

I recently shot a short film for director Michael Fisher, entitled SHELL. The film was shot approximately 2 weeks ago with an HVX using a Redrock M2 adapter and some sweet Zeiss lenses that I had previously blogged about. The film is up online now so please take a look and feel free to leave comments! I’ll be writing more in the coming weeks regarding the techinical aspects of it.

I Miss(ed) Laszlo

I’ve fallen into one of those on the road production slumps, where the world ceases to exist between call times. These things always boggle my mind. Every once in a while I can go almost a month without knowing anything that goes on outside the realm of the job. I hadn’t fully realized that I had fallen into that funk again until moments ago when I discover that Lazlo Kovacs had passed away last month, on Saturday July 21st, he was 74 years old. Laszlo was an inspiration to myself and many others.
Below is an article from the Hollywood Reporter in it’s entirety.

Another goodie from the past week or so, this is a morbidly intriguing multimedia piece by 7days Blogger, Cathy Resmer.
It’s a great use of new media on the web. Although somewhat disturbing, its beautiful in the way a train wreck is. Cathy did a great job putting this together. I’m trying to push that they include this short piece in the Vermont International Film Festival in some way. It would be great as a short before the featured presentations. Take a Look!

Bush’s New Anti-Zombie Platform

The lack of a laptop has seriously slowed my posting down.  I’ve got a bunch of stuff I scribbled on napkins that is going to come up soon.   I’m back in town for a couple of days so expect to see about 3 dozen posts this weekend, but first I have to finish a short film I’m DPing.

In the meantime check out this fucking hysterical video below.  Jim Geduldick over at Toolfarm.com just IM’d me this viral he made for myeverything.com.  Absolutely Brilliant. I can’t stop laughing at it.   Apparently he has another one in the works. Good job Jim!
