New Mac

Nathan Beaman

Wed, May 21, 2008

I finally broke down and bought a new mac this past week, even though I can feel new ones (hopefully with bluray) around the corner.  It seems so silly to make a purchase like this so close to the wwdc but I couldn’t wait any longer.

Just finished installing Final Cut Studio 2 - blazingly fast - 35 minutes for the whole kit-and-kaboodle

Put the computer together for about $5600 including shipping and all miscelaneous fees, an equivalent setup from straight from apple would have been about $10,147.

3.0ghz 8 Core MacPro
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 512MB
(2) Superdrives
Airport and Bluetooth
(1) 500 GB Drive
(3) 750GB Drives
(2) 24″ Monitors
14GB RAM

Total including shipping = $5681.31

I just finished shooting a feature in NH for the past month, I had everything shipped there and paid no sales tax.  An additional savings of $450 based on my states sales tax.

I was so pumped that I saved so much by assembling it myself so I went a little crazy with other bits and pieces.

Blackmagic Design MultibridgePro
Blackmagic Design HD Link Pro
30″ Cinema Display (for 2k Monitoring)
All necessary cabling to make everything connect.
Total with Tax and Overnight Shipping = $4,275.32
Grand Total = 9,956.63
Not bad at all.

$5,700!! That’s a sick setup! I’m spec’ing my new MacPro setup and can’t get anywhere near that price-point. Are you ordering all the “extra” components from electronic reseller?
I’m feeling like a 30″ is a must for me right now, and Blackmagic equipment makes even more appealing (but more $$$). Hope everything goes well together. New reader and I love the blog!

I’ll post all the details soon.

The 30″ is nice, but quite frankly the Apple Display is the bottom of the barrel as far as specs go in 30″ monitors.

I meant to post this as soon as I found it on Jess Gibson’s site Jess Gibson.com but I was lazy .For those not in the snowboard/skateboard world Jess was one of the ROBOT FOOD team who made some amazing snowboard videos with even better soundtracks and amazing filming.(Afterlame is forever on my iPhone vid playlist)

Anyway this video with Aaron Draplin is best summed up by watching it .WARNING TO THE KIDDIES .THIS DOES HAVE A FEW F*** BOMBS DROPPED.

I love this music video and I’m surprised I’ve never posted about it before. I was reminded of it this morning and thought I should share.

You never know when you might need that point and shoot or the little ability to use the movie record but this video shows why in today’s world carrying your camera can catch some amazing things.

Tom Guilmette happens to shoot the Red Sox’s for a living and he does so with some pretty monstrous gear. Tom has a nice little Vimeo page with a run down of the big Sony HDC-910 he uses. Check out the zoom rocker on this thing its faster then Flash Gordon.

Tom is also a proud owner of a Sony EX-1 and a Letus 35mm adapter which I have as well for my HVX-200.Nate(my blog partner in crime) has been a long time user of the Red Rock kit which is another great choice when looking for  35mm adapter . Here is the HD link and little story on Tom’s Vimeo page Tom\’s HD Vimeo page
