A pretty general comment from Apple. What exactly does this do? Hopefully it is intended to fix all the issues surrounding Studio 2 and the QT 7.2 update. I guess I don’t see Apple saying, “This update corrects our previous mistakes. Sorry, we fucked up.”
My intel machine has had no problems (knock on wood) with the recent updates, however my Power PC G5 has had major issues. I just ran the update on the Power PC machine and surprisingly it seems to have made some difference.
All my Studio 2 apps were previously crashing out on open, now with the exception of Compressor, they all at least open up. It’s somewhat refreshing. I’m a little concerned that Compressor is still crashing out every time I open it. I’m sure a reinstall will fix it, no just getting around to doing it is another story.I’ll run the update on my intel machine later, but as there has been no issue on that machine to this point I don’t anticipate any changes in that.

Another post today in the great and rediculous format war.
The first season of Heroes will be released on August 28th, which is excellent in a super geeky way. The completely discouraging news is that it will be available on DVD and HD DVD only - no Blu-ray.
An article on videobusiness.com states that Universal is standing by it’s decision to support only HD DVD and to continue developing features that showboat the internet connectivity of most HD DVD players. Many of these format war articles keep touting the built in internet accessibility of HD DVD players as a feature over most Blu-ray players. The major point that many of these articles ignore is that over 3 million Playstation 3s have been sold, which act as Blu-ray players and have internet accessibility.
Manipulative marketing is all over the place in HD home delivery. I’m really starting to get annoyed with the companies that are only offering distribution on one format rather than both. I dropped a good chunk of change on my Blu-ray player and I love it. In my eyes it is superior than HD DVD image quality wise, the interactive features take a back seat to me. I am mostly concerned with the visual integrity of the film itself. Some of my friends own both HD DVD and Blu-ray players and all of them prefer their Blu-ray discs - but that is besides the point here. I want to be able to purchase the movies i want to be able to watch without having to keep dumping $300 - $600 on a new player every time someone decides they want to make money on a new format.
Damn, but I would like to own Heroes in HD.

CBS reports that Arnold Swarzenegger told 60 Minutes that he would like to run for president. I watched excerpts of the interview on Yahoo! News and got severely irritated by the Netflix ad that aired between every segment. After watching those clips, i think it’s necessary to point out that Arnold wasn’t out and out throwing his hat into the race, he was simply saying that he would like eventually have the ability to run, and more importantly the ability to be consider a US citizen after being here for so many years.
I’m reminded of the scene in Demolition Man, where Sandra Bullock reveals to Sly Stallone that Arnold Swarzenegger was president after an amendment to the constitution resulted from his popularity. Oddly enough 10 years after the release of this film he was elected Governor of California.

Engadget reports that Target has announce they will not carry HD DVD players in their retail stores and instead only stock Blu-Ray Players. They will however continue to stock HD DVD movies and HDDVD movies and players will continue to be sold on their website.
Just last month Blockbuster also announced that it would only offer Blu-ray as a HD rental format. This looks like Blu-ray has just won another major battle in the format war. Now we just have to wait for Wal-mart to make a similar claim. Wal-mart, though hated by many, is one of the world’s largest retailers. Wal-mart DVD sales account for almost 40% of the market. This huge share gives the retailer unprecedented control in the availability and pricing of retail DVDs.

Several weeks ago I made a connection through DVXUser with filmmaker Brett Harvey. I took a look at the trailer for Brett’s film “The Union: The Business Behind Getting High” and it instantly won over my interest. One of the initial draws of the the film for me was that it was shot with the HVX200 and I approached Brett about sharing a copy of the film with me.
I recently received a screener from Brett and viewed the film. I just have to say off that from the moment I put it in the DVD player I was engaged. I couldn’t turn it off. It’s a beautifully, shot, edited and produced movie that is intelligently presented. I’ve passed it along to the programming board of the Vermont International Film Festival and it looks like it may get included in this year’s programming.

I’ve been a bit lax lately between work and moving, not because I intend on slacking off - but due to limitations in internet availability a lot lately. I’m sitting in a pub in the airport in Cedar Rapids, Illinois drinking a beer and burning time until my flight leaves for home. It’s been a brief but exhausting trip.
I came out here with Peter Kent another Vermont based filmmaker. Peter is shooting coverage of presidential candidates for a web based series entitled Walk a Day in My Shoes. The series is sponsored by SEIU, the Service Employees International Union. Each episode features a different politician working a day in the job of a union member.
We were in Cedar Rapids filming Senator Chris Dodd, (D) Connecticut, working at a Head Start center for the day. I was working with Peter, as a P2 technician and editor. We may be going to San Franciso to film Barack Obama and Las Vegas to film Hillary Clinton for the series as well. Pretty cool stuff!
I’m also finally finished unpacking so I’ll be hitting the blogging hard these coming weeks. Have a lot of testing camera and edit testing planned. I’m also pleading with Red for some Redcode Raw footage to test.
